Internal Linking

TL;DR: What is Internal Linking?

Internal linking is the practice of linking between pages on your own website. It distributes authority, creates crawl paths, and tells search engines and AI systems how your topics relate, and unlike backlinks, every internal link is fully within your control.

Internal Linking explained

Internal links do three jobs at once. They pass authority between your pages, so a page earning strong backlinks can share that equity with pages that have none. They create the paths crawlers follow, which determines whether deep pages get discovered at all. And through their anchor text and placement, they describe what each destination page is about and how it fits your site's topical structure. Google's John Mueller has called internal linking one of the most important things a site owner controls for guiding search engines to what matters.

A few mechanics worth settling. Whether a link is written as an absolute URL or a relative path makes no ranking difference; consistency and crawlability are what matter. Descriptive anchors outperform generic ones, because the anchor is a relevance signal for the destination. And orphan pages, pages no internal link points to, are effectively invisible regardless of their quality.

For AI visibility, internal linking gains a second audience. AI crawlers map your site the same way, and a deliberately cross-linked topic cluster signals depth of coverage that isolated pages cannot. The topical web you build internally is part of how machines decide you are an authority worth citing. A practical floor: every important page should be reachable within three clicks of the homepage and linked from at least two topically related pages.

In practice

Internal linking is the most neglected lever I see in audits. Teams chase backlinks they cannot control while ignoring the links they fully control, and the fix costs nothing but attention. My usual finding: important service pages sitting three or four clicks deep, generic anchors spending link equity on nothing, and no deliberate hub-and-spoke structure connecting related content. Fixing internal links is regularly the fastest win in the entire engagement.

Common misconception

People often treat internal links as site navigation and nothing more. Actually, they are a ranking and retrieval signal: where you link from, what the anchor says, and how topics cluster all shape how machines understand your site.
