Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
TL;DR: What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring and promoting content so that AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews retrieve it, cite it, and recommend it in their answers. It builds on SEO fundamentals with added emphasis on citations and corroboration.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) explained
The term was coined in the 2023 research paper "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" by Pranjal Aggarwal and colleagues at Princeton, presented at KDD 2024. The paper introduced both the name and a benchmark for measuring visibility inside AI-generated answers, and it moved the conversation from speculation to measurable tactics.
Mechanically, GEO targets how generative engines work. When you prompt an LLM with search capability, it retrieves relevant passages from the web, synthesizes them, and cites a handful of sources. GEO tactics improve your odds at each stage: content structured for retrieval, claims backed by statistics and quotations, and consistent third-party corroboration of what your site says. The Princeton study found that adding citations, quotations, and statistics produced the largest visibility gains, up to 40% in the best per-method cases, closer to 22% on a live engine. That precise framing matters, because the 40% figure is widely misquoted as an average.
For business owners and marketers, the stakes are simple: a growing share of buyers now ask an AI for recommendations before they ever run a Google search. GEO is how you earn a place in the answer they read. The playbook is learnable: structure answers machines can extract, back claims with named sources, and build the third-party footprint that lets engines corroborate what you say.
In practice
I always tell prospects that GEO at its core is very similar to traditional SEO. Most of it is what good practitioners have done for years. The real differences sit in emphasis: third-party mentions and citations carry more weight, because LLMs want to corroborate that what your website claims also exists elsewhere and is consistent. And the mental model that makes it click: Google serves a list and the user chooses. An LLM synthesizes and chooses for the user. Once a founder understands that, the strategy makes sense.
Common misconception
People often think GEO is a replacement for SEO or an entirely new discipline. Actually, it is built on SEO foundations; the difference is emphasis, not a fresh start, and abandoning SEO fundamentals to chase GEO tactics backfires.
