TL;DR: What is Large Language Model (LLM)?

A large language model (LLM) is an AI system trained on massive text datasets to understand and generate language. LLMs power ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, and they are the systems your brand needs to be visible in as buyers shift questions to them.

Large Language Model (LLM) explained

LLMs work by learning statistical patterns across enormous text corpora, then generating responses token by token. Scale changed everything: models like OpenAI's GPT series, Anthropic's Claude, and Google's Gemini absorbed enough of the written web to answer questions, follow instructions, and reason through tasks in fluent language, which is why chat became the interface and why buyers now treat these systems as advisors.

For visibility, the essential mechanic is that an LLM knows things through two different doors. The first is training data: what the model absorbed about your brand before its knowledge cutoff, which rewards a consistent, well-corroborated presence across the web over time. The second is live retrieval: what the model fetches right now when connected to search, which rewards extractable, citable content published today. A brand can be strong through one door and absent through the other, and the two are influenced by different work.

That distinction shapes strategy. Entity consistency, third-party mentions, and durable coverage feed the training door slowly and compound. Structured, direct, well-sourced content feeds the retrieval door immediately. AI visibility programs that only think about one door leave half the mechanism untouched. The good news for late movers is that deliberate effort on either door is still rare enough to stand out quickly.

In practice

When I say AI to clients, I mainly mean the LLMs, the chatbots, because that is where their buyers actually are. The two-doors framing is the one that changes their planning: you can influence what the model already believes about you, slowly, through consistency and corroboration, and you can influence what it retrieves about you today, quickly, through content built to be found and lifted. Most brands I audit have invested in neither door on purpose. The ones that work both are disproportionately visible.

Common misconception

People often think LLMs are search engines with a chat interface. Actually, a model answers from trained knowledge, retrieval, or both, and knowing which door produced an answer about your brand determines how you improve it.
