A topical map is a structured plan of everything a site should cover to own a subject: the core topic, its subtopics, the questions inside each, and how the pages interlink. It is the architecture layer that turns individual content pieces into a claim of authority.

A topical map starts from a subject and decomposes it: the pillar concept, its major subtopics, the specific questions and entities inside each, and the supporting pieces each cluster needs. The output is typically a hub-and-spoke architecture, pillar pages covering subtopics broadly, cluster content answering specific questions deeply, and deliberate internal links binding each cluster to its hub.
The map does two jobs machines can read. Completeness signals expertise: covering a topic's actual sub-questions, not just its high-volume keywords, is what separates a source from a participant. And structure signals relationships: the internal-linking web tells crawlers and retrieval systems which pages elaborate which concepts, turning a pile of articles into a navigable model of the subject. AI retrieval sharpens the payoff, because fan-out sub-queries probe a topic from many angles at once, and a mapped cluster has a candidate passage waiting for far more of those angles than scattered coverage does.
The discipline is in what the map excludes. A topical map is a coverage plan, not a keyword dump: every planned page needs a distinct meaning to own, and overlapping pages get consolidated at the planning stage. Mapping the topic before producing content is the difference between building authority and accumulating pages.
In practice
This glossary is a topical map you can click through: three category hubs, terms as cluster content, every entry linked into the web from at least two others. That structure was planned before the first term published, and it is the same discipline I run for clients: map first, produce second. In my content workflow, the topical map feeds the content matrix, which layers in personas and funnel stages, because coverage of a subject and coverage of a buyer are both required and are not the same map.
Common misconception
People often equate a topical map with a keyword list organized into folders. Actually, the map is about meanings and relationships: distinct concepts, complete sub-question coverage, and a linking structure machines can traverse.
