TL;DR: What is Content Gap Analysis?

Content gap analysis is the systematic comparison of what your site covers against what your buyers ask and what competitors rank or get cited for, surfacing the specific topics, questions, and intents you are missing. The gaps become the prioritized content plan.

Content Gap Analysis explained

The analysis triangulates three views. Demand: the queries and prompts your market actually uses, across intents and funnel stages. Competition: what rival sites rank for, get cited for, and cover that you do not, keyword-gap tooling makes this side mechanical. And self: an honest inventory of your existing coverage, including pieces that exist but fail their intent. The gaps are wherever demand exists, competitors show it is winnable, and your inventory comes up empty or inadequate.

Two refinements keep the output strategic rather than mechanical. First, gaps must pass a fit filter: competitors rank for plenty that your business should not chase, and a gap is only an opportunity when the intent maps to your buyers and your offer. Second, the AI layer added a new gap type worth checking explicitly: prompts where engines answer questions in your category while citing everyone but you, visibility gaps that classic keyword tools never surface.

The output feeds directly into planning: gaps scored by business value, difficulty, and effort become the priority order, and in a matrix-driven workflow they land as rows with their personas, stages, and reasons attached. Done on a cadence rather than once, gap analysis becomes the sensing mechanism that keeps a content program pointed at what the market is actually asking.

In practice

Gap analysis is a standing input in my research phase, and the refinement that matters most is ruthlessness about fit: the tool export always contains a hundred gaps, and maybe twenty deserve to exist as content for this specific business. The AI-era addition I now run every time: checking which category prompts cite competitors while the client is absent, because those answer-level gaps are invisible in keyword tools and they are usually the exact mid-funnel silence costing shortlist spots.

Common misconception

People often treat the keyword-gap tool export as the content plan. Actually, the export is raw material; the analysis is filtering it through buyer fit, intent, and business value, and most tool-surfaced gaps deserve to stay unfilled.
