Pre-Launch SEO Strategy
TL;DR: What is Pre-Launch SEO Strategy?
Pre-launch SEO strategy is visibility work done during a website build or redesign, not after it: URL structure, information architecture, redirect mapping, and schema planned alongside developers and designers so the site launches optimized instead of needing retrofits. Typically four to eight weeks of embedded work during the project.
Pre-Launch SEO Strategy explained
The economics are the argument. Decisions made casually during a build, URL patterns, page hierarchy, template structure, how headings and content blocks render, become expensive to change the moment a site is live and indexed. Retrofitting SEO after launch means re-litigating settled decisions, migrating URLs that already accumulated equity, and often watching rankings dip through changes that cost nothing to get right the first time.
The work happens inside the project, not parallel to it. URL structure and information architecture get mapped before templates lock. Redirect plans get built page by page before the old site goes dark, because launch-day redirect gaps are where redesigns bleed rankings. Schema and machine-readability get designed into templates so every future page inherits them. Crawlability, rendering, and Core Web Vitals get reviewed while developers can still act on the findings cheaply.
The AI layer raises the stakes further, because modern launches have two audiences from day one: the redesigned site that looks beautiful to humans but renders its content through heavy scripts, buries text in images, or blocks AI crawlers at the CDN is invisible to the fastest-growing readers of the web. Building for machine readability during the build costs a conversation; discovering its absence afterward costs a project.
In practice
Redesigns are where I see the most preventable damage in this industry: a proud launch, then a traffic cliff, then a forensic redirect hunt. So on pre-launch engagements I embed with the build team for the duration, typically four to eight weeks, reviewing IA, URLs, redirects, and templates as they form. The wins are unglamorous and permanent. My favorite deliverable is the launch that loses nothing, which no one celebrates, because nothing visibly happened. That was the point.
Common misconception
People often schedule SEO for after launch, once the site is done. Actually, the highest-leverage SEO decisions are build decisions, and by launch day the cheap window to make them correctly has already closed.
