Quick takes

Short answers to common questions about SEO and AI search. Quote them with attribution to Tarun Gehani, SEO and AI visibility consultant.

Is SEO dead because of AI?

“SEO isn’t dead. It’s shifted. Google now handles more than 5 trillion searches a year, up from about 2 trillion in 2016, and AI chatbot use is growing on top of that. AI referrals are still only about 1% of website visits. The real change is that buyers now research and make decisions inside AI answers without ever visiting your site, so you need to know how your brand shows up there. The good news is that what works in AI search looks a lot like good SEO: a fast, technically sound site with clear, useful content.”

What’s the biggest mistake companies make with AI visibility?

“The biggest mistake is doing nothing. The second biggest is acting without a baseline. Someone reads a LinkedIn post, then rewrites pages or fires their agency before anyone has measured where they stand today. If you wanted to lose weight, you’d step on the scale before changing your diet. Same idea: measure first, act, then measure again.”

How should a company measure success in AI search when clicks are shrinking?

“Stop judging AI search the way we judged keyword rankings. Track two things. First, how often AI answers mention your brand and cite your site across hundreds of runs of the prompts your buyers actually ask, compared with your competitors. Second, how AI crawlers are hitting your site, which you can see in your server logs. Checking a handful of prompts once a week is too small a sample to tell you anything.”

What’s one thing a B2B SaaS company should do this quarter to show up in ChatGPT answers?

“Start by deciding which answers you need to show up in, and which AI tools your buyers actually use. Then take inventory of everything that describes your company, both on your site and off it: your pages, profiles, listings, directories and third-party mentions. Make sure they all say the same clear, current thing about who you are and what you do. AI tools get their picture of you from all of those sources, so if they disagree, the answers will too.”
