AI Visibility Audit
TL;DR: What is AI Visibility Audit?
An AI visibility audit is a structured assessment of how visible a brand is in AI-generated answers and what is holding that visibility back. It benchmarks presence across AI engines, then diagnoses the technical, content, and entity-level barriers between the brand and better results.
AI Visibility Audit explained
The audit answers two questions in sequence. First, where do you stand: how often the brand appears in answers across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews for the prompts buyers actually use, from branded queries through the middle of the funnel. Second, why: what is preventing stronger visibility.
The diagnostic side covers three layers. Technical access examines whether AI crawlers such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot can reach the site at all, since security plugins and CDN settings frequently block them silently. Content extractability examines whether pages are structured so retrieval systems can pull clean, self-contained answers. Entity signals examine whether the brand is consistently described and corroborated across the wider web, which matters because a McKinsey consumer survey from August 2025 found a brand's own website accounts for only 5 to 10% of the sources AI search platforms reference. Most of what AI reads about you lives somewhere else.
The output is a baseline number and a prioritized fix list. The baseline matters as much as the fixes: without a starting measurement, there is no way to prove the work moved anything, and AI visibility is too new a discipline to run on faith. Re-run on a schedule, the same measurement becomes a progress report, which is how the audit matures from a one-time diagnosis into a management tool.
In practice
What surprises clients most is how invisible they are. Nearly everyone shows up for branded queries and assumes the rest follows. It does not. The middle of the funnel is where the silence lives, and the culprits are remarkably consistent: design elements and bot protection quietly blocking AI crawlers, and content written the old way, long pages built to carry every keyword variation. Retrieval systems cannot efficiently parse that. Short, direct, and concise wins, and the audit usually uncovers more opportunity than the client expected to find.
Common misconception
People often expect an AI visibility audit to be an SEO audit with new branding. Actually, it measures different surfaces (answers rather than rankings) and finds different failure points, starting with whether AI systems can read your site at all.
