AI-Generated Content
TL;DR: What is AI-Generated Content?
AI-generated content is text, images, or media produced by AI systems, from fully machine-written articles to AI-assisted drafts refined by human editors. Search engines judge it by quality and usefulness rather than by origin, and the market now punishes the unedited version at scale.
AI-Generated Content explained
Google settled the policy question in its February 2023 guidance: rewarding high-quality content "however it is produced," with the standards being usefulness, originality, and the people-first qualities behind E-E-A-T. What Google does police is purpose: the March 2024 spam-policy update named scaled content abuse, mass-producing content primarily to manipulate rankings, as a violation regardless of whether humans or machines wrote it. Origin is not the sin; slop is.
Provenance, meanwhile, is becoming visible. The EU AI Act's transparency rules became enforceable in August 2026, and Anthropic announced that Claude models launched from August 2, 2026 embed an invisible watermark in generated text worldwide, adapting Google DeepMind's SynthID approach, with a detection API planned. Google already watermarks its own models' output. The marks prove a model processed text, not who authored the ideas, and heavy editing can strip them, but the direction is clear: assume AI involvement in content will be increasingly detectable.
The strategic reality is unchanged by any of it: unedited AI output at volume is commodity by construction, the exact content retrieval systems have least reason to cite, while AI-assisted work carrying original data, genuine perspective, and editorial accountability competes fine. The tool never decided the outcome; the process around it does.
In practice
My position: Google told us the answer, quality however it is produced, and the market enforces it harder than Google does. The agencies churning out hundreds of AI posts without strategy, opinion, or original stats get exactly the results that deserves: none. The way through is the one I run, strategy and purpose first, then semi-automated production with human editors built into the process. And with watermarking now shipping, assume your process will eventually be legible; build one you would be comfortable having read.
Common misconception
People often believe Google penalizes AI-generated content as a category. Actually, Google's stated target is low-quality and scaled manipulative content regardless of origin; useful, original, accountable content is fine however it was drafted.
