TL;DR: What is Citation Share?

Citation share is the percentage of citations in AI-generated answers that point to your brand or website versus competitors, measured across a set of relevant prompts. Where a mention shows you are in the conversation, a citation means the AI is leaning on you as a source.

Citation Share explained

Citation share adapts the share-of-voice concept to how AI answers are actually constructed. When a system like Perplexity, ChatGPT search, or Google's AI Overviews retrieves web content to answer a prompt, it links a small set of sources. Citation share asks: across the prompts that matter to your business, what fraction of those source slots do you hold?

The metric is consolidating fast in tooling. Similarweb reports it as a named metric, and Microsoft has surfaced citation data in Bing's ecosystem, but no single owner has locked the definition, and vendor methodologies differ in which engines they query and how they weight position. The stable core across all of them: count citations to you, divide by total citations observed, compare against competitors over time.

What makes the metric worth tracking is what a citation implies that a mention does not. Being named in an answer means the model knows you exist. Being cited means the system retrieved your page, judged it the best available support for a claim, and pointed users at it as the reference. That is a trust decision, repeated across thousands of answers, and the brands winning it accumulate an authority position that is slow to build and, usefully, slow for competitors to take away.

In practice

I explain it to clients as two levels. A brand mention in an AI conversation is great, that is visibility. A citation is another level: the LLM went to the web, found a statistic or a definition, and returned it with your site as the source. That means it is leaning on you as a reference. Both matter, but citation is arguably more authoritative and longer lasting, and if your citation share beats your competitors', you are becoming the definitive source for that information, which usually pulls mentions up with it.

Common misconception

People often treat mentions and citations as the same win. Actually, they are different signals: a mention means the model knows your name, while a citation means it staked an answer on your content, and only one of those makes you the reference.
