Featured Snippet

TL;DR: What is Featured Snippet?

A featured snippet is the highlighted answer box Google places above traditional results, extracting a passage, list, or table directly from a ranking page. It was the original answer-first surface, and winning it still trains content in exactly the habits AI citation rewards.

Featured Snippet explained

Featured snippets extract and elevate: Google selects a passage that directly answers the query, displays it in position zero with attribution, and links the source. Formats follow the question's shape, paragraph definitions, step lists, comparison tables, and eligibility generally requires ranking on page one, with the snippet then selected from among the ranking pages for answer clarity rather than rank order.

Winning them is a formatting discipline with a long track record: pose the question as a heading, answer it immediately in a tight, self-contained passage, roughly forty to sixty words for paragraph snippets, then elaborate; structure lists and tables as actual lists and tables; and match the format the query already displays. The double-edged economics arrived early too: snippets absorb clicks for simple lookups while paying in visibility and credibility, the original zero-click bargain.

Their strategic meaning now is lineage. Snippets taught search to extract passages and taught publishers to write extractable answers, and AI Overviews industrialized both halves: fan-out retrieval selecting passages, answers assembled from them, sources credited. Content built to snippet standards, direct, self-contained, formatted to its question, is already built to the standards AI citation selects for, which is why the old tactic keeps paying on the new surface.

In practice

Snippets were the original proof that the direct-answer format wins, and I still use them as the training exercise for teams new to answer-first writing: heading as the question, answer in the first sentence or two, structure matching the query. The reframe I offer clients worried about snippet click loss has only gotten more true: you are not writing for the click alone anymore. The same passage that wins the snippet is the passage the AI systems lift, and being the extracted answer is the position.

Common misconception

People often think the top-ranked page automatically gets the featured snippet. Actually, Google selects the clearest extractable answer from among ranking pages, which is why position three with better formatting regularly takes it.
