TL;DR: What is SGE (Search Generative Experience)?

Search Generative Experience (SGE) was Google's experimental AI-search beta, launched in Labs in May 2023 and retired as a name in May 2024 when it graduated into AI Overviews. The term is historical, and it survives mostly as a lesson in how fast this vocabulary moves.

SGE (Search Generative Experience) explained

SGE was Google's first public test of generative answers in search: opt-in through Search Labs, it placed an AI-composed summary above results for many queries and let users ask follow-ups. For a year it was the industry's shorthand for Google's AI-search future, generating conference talks, optimization guides, and a small literature of SGE predictions.

Then the name disappeared. At I/O in May 2024, Google graduated the experiment into AI Overviews, rolling the feature out broadly under the new name, with AI Mode following in 2025 as the fuller conversational surface. The functionality evolved and shipped; the term SGE was simply left behind, and content built around it aged badly almost overnight.

That lifecycle, beta name to industry vocabulary to deprecated term in roughly a year, is the real reason this entry exists. The AI-search glossary is volatile: SGE became AI Overviews, SearchGPT became ChatGPT search, Bard became Gemini. Durable understanding sits with the mechanics, retrieval, fan-out, passage selection, citation, which have only deepened while the labels churned. Anyone evaluating advice in this space can date it instantly: if it says SGE in the present tense, it was written before mid-2024, and it should be read with that in mind. The entry stays in this glossary as a translation aid and a timestamp, not as a live optimization target.

In practice

I keep SGE in the glossary because clients still say it, and my job is to translate, not correct them mid-sentence. It is also my favorite cautionary tale for this space: never anchor a strategy, a service name, or a cornerstone page to a product label that one company can retire in a keynote. I bet my positioning on plain language, AI visibility, for exactly this reason. Mechanics outlive names, and the names here have a shelf life measured in months.

Common misconception

People often think SGE and AI Overviews are different Google features. Actually, they are the same lineage: SGE was the Labs beta, and AI Overviews is what it became when Google shipped it broadly in May 2024.
