TL;DR: What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of optimizing content so that answer-generating systems, from featured snippets to AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity, select and cite it when responding to user questions. In current industry usage it overlaps almost entirely with GEO.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) explained

AEO emerged as a label for a shift that predates the current AI wave: search surfaces increasingly answer questions directly instead of listing links. Featured snippets and voice assistants were the early answer engines; LLM-based assistants and Google's AI Overviews are the current ones. The optimization work follows the surface: front-loaded direct answers, question-shaped structure, extractable passages, and the authority signals that make a system confident enough to cite you.

The terminology, honestly, is unsettled. Some practitioners draw a line where AEO covers direct-answer surfaces and GEO covers generative engines; many others, this glossary included, treat the two as near-synonyms describing the same body of work. No single organization owns the definition, which is part of why the acronym debate continues. What is not debated is demand: search interest in the term grew roughly eightfold in the year to August 2026, tracking the same curve as GEO itself.

For a founder or marketing lead, the practical guidance is to ignore the label war and focus on the work: answer real buyer questions directly, structure content so machines can lift clean answers, and build the corroboration that makes engines trust you as a source. Whatever the industry ends up calling it, that is the job.

In practice

I do not treat AEO as distinct from GEO. They are saying the same thing, and the work underneath them is the same work. If anything, my take is that the industry should have standardized on AEO, because GEO drags geography along with it: geo-targeting, geo-mapping, twenty years of location connotations. I use AI visibility as my umbrella term for exactly this reason. Clients need the outcome named plainly, not another acronym to adjudicate.

Common misconception

People often assume AEO and GEO are rival disciplines requiring separate strategies and separate budgets. Actually, they describe overlapping work with different labels, and running them as two programs duplicates effort.
