TL;DR: What is Citation Outreach?

Citation outreach is the AI-era evolution of link building: earning links, brand mentions, and citations specifically in the places AI systems draw their answers from. The approach is classic outreach; the target research now starts with where LLMs actually get their information.

Citation Outreach explained

The craft descends directly from link building, and most of its discipline transfers: identify sources that matter, offer them something genuinely worth referencing, and build the relationships that make coverage repeatable. What changed is the definition of a win and the map of targets. A win now includes unlinked brand mentions and citations, not just followed links, because language models learn brands from mentions wherever they occur, and corroboration across independent sources is a core trust signal in AI answers.

The target map is redrawn by evidence rather than habit. The research step asks: for the prompts that matter in this category, which sources do the engines actually cite? The answers skew toward comparison and listicle content, industry publications, directories, review platforms, and communities, with each engine showing its own preferences, and classic tactics like volume guest posting mattering less than they did. The strategy writes itself from that map: get into the specific listicles, comparisons, and community conversations the engines demonstrably draw from, with accurate, consistent descriptions of the brand.

Purpose and sequencing separate this from spray-and-pray outreach: the citation targets come from measurement, the pitch is built on something citable, and every placement feeds the same entity story the rest of the footprint tells.

In practice

In my current practice I build the citation outreach strategy and my clients' teams execute it, with me guiding along the way, which keeps the work in the hands that own the relationships. The strategy step is where the leverage is anyway: researching which sources the LLMs actually cite for your category's prompts, then prioritizing those listicles, comparisons, directories, and communities. The concept is the same as link building ever was; the target list is now chosen by evidence instead of habit.

Common misconception

People often run citation outreach as link building with a new name and the same old target list. Actually, the target list is the change: it comes from researching which sources AI engines cite, and mentions count as wins even without links.
