Each entry gives you a short answer you can quote, the mechanics behind it, and what it means for your strategy, including where the received wisdom gets it wrong.

AI Search Agentic SEO Agentic SEO is the practice of optimizing a website for AI agents that browse, evaluate, and act on behalf of users, from researching vendors to completing purchases. It extends SEO's audience from humans and search crawlers to autonomous software doing tasks for a person. AI Search AI Brand Mention Monitoring AI brand mention monitoring is the ongoing tracking of how, where, and how accurately your brand appears across AI-generated answers, alongside traditional search. It converts AI visibility from a one-time audit finding into a managed, trending metric with actionable alerts. AI Search AI Citation An AI citation is when an AI system names or links your website as a source for its answer, crediting your content as the basis for a claim. Citations are the strongest visibility signal in AI search, because they mean the system staked its answer on you. AI Search AI Mode AI Mode is Google's conversational search experience, a dedicated tab where users ask questions in natural language and get synthesized, cited answers with follow-up dialogue. Introduced in early 2025, it runs on query fan-out retrieval and represents Google's fullest step toward answer-first search. AI Search AI Overview (AIO) AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries Google shows above traditional search results, assembled from retrieved web sources with citations. They answer many queries directly on the results page, which makes being a cited source in them a distinct visibility goal from ranking beneath them. AI Search AI Share of Voice AI share of voice is the percentage of brand appearances across AI-generated answers that belong to you versus competitors, measured over a consistent set of prompts. It adapts marketing's classic share-of-voice metric to the surfaces where buyers now ask their questions. My Methodology AI Visibility AI visibility is how often, and how favorably, your brand appears in AI-generated answers when buyers ask tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews questions your business should be part of. It is the outcome that GEO and AEO tactics exist to improve. My Methodology AI Visibility Audit An AI visibility audit is a structured assessment of how visible a brand is in AI-generated answers and what is holding that visibility back. It benchmarks presence across AI engines, then diagnoses the technical, content, and entity-level barriers between the brand and better results. My Methodology AI Visibility Scoring Report An AI Visibility Scoring Report is a benchmarked assessment that scores a brand across the key signals determining AI visibility: entity recognition, structured data, citation patterns, E-E-A-T signals, and topical authority. It turns AI visibility from a vague concern into a number leadership can track. AI Search AI-Generated Content AI-generated content is text, images, or media produced by AI systems, from fully machine-written articles to AI-assisted drafts refined by human editors. Search engines judge it by quality and usefulness rather than by origin, and the market now punishes the unedited version at scale. Core SEO Anchor Text Anchor text is the visible, clickable text of a hyperlink. Search engines and AI systems read it to understand what the destination page is about, which makes a descriptive anchor like "SEO audit checklist" far more valuable than "click here." AI Search Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of optimizing content so that answer-generating systems, from featured snippets to AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity, select and cite it when responding to user questions. In current industry usage it overlaps almost entirely with GEO. AI Search Author Attribution Author attribution is visibly and structurally crediting content to a real, identifiable person: a byline, an author page, and Person schema connecting the work to the human behind it. It is a trust signal for readers, an E-E-A-T signal for Google, and an entity signal for AI systems. Core SEO Backlink / Link Equity A backlink is a link from another website to yours, and link equity is the authority it passes. Backlinks remain one of the oldest ranking signals in search, and in AI search they take on a second role: corroborating that what your site claims is confirmed elsewhere. AI Search Brand Entity A brand entity is your company as machines understand it: a distinct, recognized thing with attributes, relationships, and a track record, rather than a name that appears in text. How strongly and accurately that entity is established shapes every AI answer that mentions you. AI Search Citation Outreach Citation outreach is the AI-era evolution of link building: earning links, brand mentions, and citations specifically in the places AI systems draw their answers from. The approach is classic outreach; the target research now starts with where LLMs actually get their information. AI Search Citation Share Citation share is the percentage of citations in AI-generated answers that point to your brand or website versus competitors, measured across a set of relevant prompts. Where a mention shows you are in the conversation, a citation means the AI is leaning on you as a source. My Methodology Clean Handoff A clean handoff is an engagement ending with complete transfer: every deliverable, document, and piece of context packaged so the client's team can execute independently, with no retained dependencies and no lock-in. Continuing the relationship stays a choice, never a necessity. Core SEO Click-Through Rate (CTR) Click-through rate (CTR) is the percentage of people who click your result after seeing it: clicks divided by impressions. It measures how compelling your listing is in its context, and in the zero-click era it must be read alongside where and how often you appear at all. AI Search Content Chunking Content chunking is how retrieval systems split pages into smaller passages, embed each one, and retrieve at the passage level rather than the page level. It means every section of your content competes on its own, and self-contained sections win. My Methodology Content Engine A content engine is an end-to-end workflow that turns research into a running content program: keyword, competitive, and persona research feeding a content matrix, which drives prioritized production mapped across quarters, with optional design assets, all under human editorial review. AI Search Content Freshness / QDF Content freshness is how current a piece of content is and how recently it was meaningfully updated. Search engines boost recency for queries that deserve it (QDF), and AI retrieval extends the bias: systems favor current sources, and visible update signals feed that judgment. Core SEO Content Gap Analysis Content gap analysis is the systematic comparison of what your site covers against what your buyers ask and what competitors rank or get cited for, surfacing the specific topics, questions, and intents you are missing. The gaps become the prioritized content plan. My Methodology Content Matrix A content matrix is a working grid that maps target keywords and topic clusters against personas, funnel stages, calls to action, current rankings, and content gaps, turning research into a prioritized inventory of the specific pages and articles a website needs. My Methodology Content Strategy Framework A content strategy framework is an ICP-aligned content architecture that connects your product or service to the search queries and AI prompts your buyers actually use, across awareness, consideration, and decision stages. It is built around your audience, not generic topic clusters. AI Search Content Velocity Content velocity is the rate at which a site publishes new and updated content. Velocity matters as a consistency and freshness signal, but only multiplied by quality and strategy: speed applied to commodity content just accumulates pages machines have no reason to cite. Core SEO Core Web Vitals Core Web Vitals are Google's user-experience metrics measuring how fast a page loads its main content (LCP), how quickly it responds to interaction (INP), and how visually stable it is while loading (CLS). They are a modest ranking input and a meaningful experience baseline. Core SEO Crawlability Crawlability is whether search engine and AI crawlers can discover and fetch your pages: reachable URLs, permissive robots rules, working links, and content that renders for bots. It is the first gate in visibility; nothing gets ranked, indexed, or cited that never gets crawled. AI Search DefinedTerm Schema DefinedTerm schema is structured data that marks a page as an authoritative definition of a specific term, with DefinedTermSet grouping a collection of them into a formal glossary. It is a niche, underused markup that fits definitional content exactly. This glossary runs on it. My Methodology Deliverables-First Approach A deliverables-first approach is consulting structured around transferable work products, frameworks, roadmaps, scored reports, and documents the client owns outright, rather than around advice, access, or hours. The engagement's value survives the engagement's end. It is the structural opposite of consulting that must be re-rented monthly. Core SEO Domain Authority vs Domain Rating Domain Authority (Moz) and Domain Rating (Ahrefs) are third-party scores estimating a site's link-based strength on a 0-100 scale. Neither is a Google metric or a ranking factor; both are comparative gauges, useful for benchmarking and nearly meaningless as absolute numbers. Core SEO E-E-A-T E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness: the framework Google's human quality raters use to evaluate content quality, with trust as the most important member. It is not a direct ranking factor but the standard ranking systems are tuned toward. AI Search Entity Footprint An entity footprint is the total set of places and signals across the web where your brand entity appears: your site, profiles, directories, press, reviews, and mentions. Its breadth and consistency determine how much material machines have to learn who you are. AI Search Entity Home An entity home is the single canonical page, usually on your own website, that search engines and AI systems treat as the authoritative source of truth about who you are, what you do, and whom you serve. The concept was developed by Jason Barnard of Kalicube. AI Search Entity SEO Entity SEO is optimizing around the people, organizations, products, and concepts machines recognize as distinct things, rather than around keyword strings. It aligns your content and signals with how search engines and LLMs actually model the world: as entities and relationships. AI Search FAQPage Schema FAQPage schema is structured data marking a page's question-and-answer content so machines can read each Q&A pair directly. Google restricted its rich-result display to government and health sites in 2023, but the markup retains value as machine-readable context. Keep it where the questions are real. Core SEO Featured Snippet A featured snippet is the highlighted answer box Google places above traditional results, extracting a passage, list, or table directly from a ranking page. It was the original answer-first surface, and winning it still trains content in exactly the habits AI citation rewards. My Methodology Fractional SEO Advisory Fractional SEO advisory is a month-to-month engagement where a senior SEO and AI visibility strategist functions as your embedded leader: setting direction, reviewing work, joining key calls, and keeping the team accountable to the roadmap, without the cost or commitment of a full-time hire. AI Search Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring and promoting content so that AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews retrieve it, cite it, and recommend it in their answers. It builds on SEO fundamentals with added emphasis on citations and corroboration. AI Search Ghost Citation A ghost citation is when an AI answer links your page as a source but never says your brand's name in the answer text. The term was coined by Kevin Indig, whose study with Semrush found 61.7% of AI citations work this way: your content used, your brand invisible. AI Search Grounding Grounding is the process of anchoring an AI system's output in retrieved, verifiable source material so its claims trace back to real documents rather than the model's memory. Grounded answers are where citations come from, and being a groundable source is the practical goal of AI visibility work. Core SEO Heading Tags (H1-H6) Heading tags (H1 through H6) are the HTML elements that structure a page into a hierarchy: one H1 stating what the page is, with H2s and deeper levels organizing its sections. They are the outline machines read first, and in AI retrieval they define the chunks. AI Search Human-in-the-Loop Human-in-the-loop (HITL) is a system design where automated processes include mandatory human review or decision points, especially before consequential or irreversible steps. In content and SEO operations, it is the gate that keeps AI-accelerated work accountable. The gates are permanent design, not a phase to automate away. Core SEO Indexability Indexability is whether a search engine can include a page in its index after crawling it. A page must be both crawlable and indexable to appear in search results or be retrieved by AI systems; a problem with either makes the page invisible. AI Search Information Gain Information gain is a measure of how much new information a piece of content adds beyond what is already available, a concept from a Google patent describing scores for documents based on their novel contribution. Content that only repeats consensus scores low; content adding something scores high. Core SEO Internal Linking Internal linking is the practice of linking between pages on your own website. It distributes authority, creates crawl paths, and tells search engines and AI systems how your topics relate, and unlike backlinks, every internal link is fully within your control. Core SEO Keyword Cannibalization Keyword cannibalization is when multiple pages on the same site target the same query or intent, forcing them to compete against each other. The result is diluted authority, unstable rankings, and machines unsure which page to trust; consolidation is usually the cure. Core SEO Keyword Intent Keyword intent is the purpose behind a search: what the person actually wants to accomplish, typically classified as informational, navigational, commercial, or transactional. Matching content to intent is more decisive than matching it to the keyword's words. Intent is the first filter, before volume or difficulty. AI Search Knowledge Graph A knowledge graph is a structured database of entities and the relationships between them, which search engines and AI systems use to understand who is who and what connects to what. Google's Knowledge Graph, launched in 2012, is the most consequential example for marketers. AI Search Large Language Model (LLM) A large language model (LLM) is an AI system trained on massive text datasets to understand and generate language. LLMs power ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, and they are the systems your brand needs to be visible in as buyers shift questions to them. AI Search LLM Crawlers LLM crawlers are the bots AI companies use to read the web: GPTBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, and others. They gather content for model training and live retrieval, and whether they can access your site is the floor under all AI visibility. AI Search llms.txt llms.txt is a proposed plain-text file at a site's root listing its most important content in a format built for AI systems to read. Proposed by Jeremy Howard in 2024, it remains unratified, largely unread by AI search crawlers, and most useful for AI agents and developer docs. Core SEO Long-Tail Keywords Long-tail keywords are longer, more specific search queries with lower individual volume but clearer intent. Collectively they make up most of search demand, and they matter more in AI search, where conversational prompts are long-tail by nature, and often the fastest wins available to smaller sites. AI Search Machine-Readable Content Machine-readable content is content structured so that AI systems, crawlers, and agents can parse, extract, and act on it accurately: real HTML text, clear heading hierarchies, structured data, and front-loaded answers instead of meaning locked inside design, images, or scripts. My Methodology Mid-Funnel Silence Mid-funnel silence is the visibility gap where a brand appears in AI answers for branded and bottom-of-funnel queries but is absent from the consideration-stage questions where buyers actually build their shortlists. It is the most common finding in AI visibility audits. AI Search Multimodal Search Multimodal search is search that accepts and combines multiple input types, text, images, voice, and video, and draws on multiple content types to answer. Google Lens queries, voice prompts, and AI Mode's image understanding all mean visibility is no longer a text-only contest. Core SEO Organic Search Organic search is the unpaid traffic and visibility a site earns through search engine results, as distinct from paid placements. It remains the web's largest sustained discovery channel, and its earned-not-bought nature is exactly what makes it compound and endure. AI Search Passage Indexing Passage indexing is Google's ability to rank a specific passage from a page, not just the page as a whole, letting a precise answer buried in longer content surface for a specific query. Launched in 2021, it previewed the passage-level retrieval that now powers AI search. My Methodology Pre-Launch SEO Strategy Pre-launch SEO strategy is visibility work done during a website build or redesign, not after it: URL structure, information architecture, redirect mapping, and schema planned alongside developers and designers so the site launches optimized instead of needing retrofits. Typically four to eight weeks of embedded work during the project. AI Search Prompt Engineering for SEO Prompt engineering for SEO is the craft of writing effective instructions for AI systems in SEO work, and, increasingly, the discipline of understanding how buyers phrase their own prompts so content can be built to answer them. Both directions now belong in an SEO skill set. AI Search Prompt Library A prompt library is a curated, maintained collection of proven prompts for recurring work: research, analysis, drafting, QA, and measurement. It converts individual prompting skill into a repeatable team asset, and in AI visibility it includes the locked prompt sets used for tracking. AI Search Prompt Volume Prompt volume is an estimate of how often people ask AI assistants a given question or topic, the AI-era analogue of keyword search volume. Unlike search volume, no platform publishes it, so every figure is a modeled estimate, and methodologies differ meaningfully. AI Search Query Fan-Out Query fan-out is the technique AI search systems use to break a single prompt into many related sub-queries, run them simultaneously, and synthesize the retrieved results into one answer. Google's Elizabeth Reid described the technique publicly at Google I/O 2025. Core SEO Redirect (301 vs 302) A 301 redirect tells machines a URL has moved permanently and its signals should transfer to the destination; a 302 signals a temporary move, keeping the original URL's standing intact. Choosing correctly preserves equity; choosing carelessly strands or delays it. AI Search Relevance Engineering Relevance engineering is a term coined by Mike King of iPullRank for the discipline of systematically aligning content with how modern retrieval systems evaluate relevance: intent coverage, semantic structure, and data-driven iteration across content and technical layers. It is on-page discipline named for how retrieval actually works now. AI Search Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is the architecture that lets an AI system fetch relevant documents at answer time and generate its response from them, rather than relying only on training data. RAG is the mechanism behind cited AI answers, and the reason AI visibility work pays off quickly. Core SEO robots.txt Robots.txt is a plain text file at the root of your website that tells crawlers which URLs they may access. It now also governs AI crawlers like GPTBot and ClaudeBot, which makes it the first control lever for your AI visibility. Core SEO Search Intent Search intent is the underlying goal a search or prompt is trying to satisfy: the task, question, or decision behind the words. Modern engines and AI systems rank and cite by how completely content satisfies that goal, making intent the true unit of optimization. Core SEO Search Visibility Search visibility is a composite measure of how present a site is across the results that matter to it, weighting rankings by position across a keyword set. The modern version of the metric extends past blue links into answer surfaces: snippets, AI Overviews, and AI citations. AI Search Semantic Search Semantic search is retrieval based on meaning rather than exact keyword matching: systems represent queries and content as concepts and find matches by relatedness. It is the foundation both modern Google and AI retrieval are built on, and it rewards content organized around meaning. My Methodology Semi-Automated SEO Workflow A semi-automated SEO workflow uses AI and automation for the mechanical layers of SEO work, research assembly, data pulls, drafting, formatting, publishing, while keeping human judgment as the gate on strategy, quality, and everything that ships. Automation serves the practitioner; it does not replace them. AI Search SGE (Search Generative Experience) Search Generative Experience (SGE) was Google's experimental AI-search beta, launched in Labs in May 2023 and retired as a name in May 2024 when it graduated into AI Overviews. The term is historical, and it survives mostly as a lesson in how fast this vocabulary moves. AI Search Share of Model Share of model measures how often AI systems mention or recommend your brand compared with competitors when answering relevant prompts. It is the AI-era counterpart to share of voice, tracking presence inside model answers rather than ad impressions or search rankings. AI Search Structured Data / Schema Markup Structured data is code, usually JSON-LD following the schema.org vocabulary, that explicitly tells machines what your content is: an article, a product, an organization, a defined term. It converts pages machines must interpret into facts machines can simply read. It is the vocabulary layer beneath most entity and AI visibility work. Core SEO Technical SEO Technical SEO is the foundational layer that makes a website crawlable, indexable, fast, and machine-readable: site architecture, rendering, Core Web Vitals, redirects, and structured data. Everything else in search and AI visibility depends on this layer working. It is the multiplier under every other investment. AI Search Topical Authority Topical authority is the trust a site earns by covering a subject with depth, completeness, and consistency, so that machines treat it as a go-to source for that topic. It compounds: each strong, connected piece raises the odds every other piece gets surfaced and cited. AI Search Topical Map A topical map is a structured plan of everything a site should cover to own a subject: the core topic, its subtopics, the questions inside each, and how the pages interlink. It is the architecture layer that turns individual content pieces into a claim of authority. My Methodology Two Doors of AI Visibility The two doors of AI visibility are the separate routes by which an AI system can know your brand: the training door, what the model absorbed about you before its knowledge cutoff, and the retrieval door, what it fetches about you live. Each door is influenced by different work. My Methodology White-Label SEO & AI Visibility White-label SEO and AI visibility services are deliverables produced by an outside specialist but presented under an agency's own brand: audits, roadmaps, scoring reports, and strategy documents built to the agency's spec, which the agency presents, invoices, and takes credit for. AI Search Wikidata / Wikipedia Entity A Wikidata or Wikipedia entity is your brand's presence in the open reference databases that machines trust most: a Wikipedia article and/or a Wikidata item with a unique identifier. These entries carry outsized weight in knowledge graphs and LLM training data. Core SEO XML Sitemap An XML sitemap is a machine-readable file listing the URLs a site wants crawled, with optional metadata like last-modified dates. It is a discovery aid and a statement of intent to crawlers, not a ranking lever, and it works only as well as its hygiene. AI Search Zero-Click Search A zero-click search is a query that ends without the user clicking through to any website, because the answer appeared directly on the results page or in an AI summary. It is the defining traffic pattern of answer-first search, and it changes what visibility is worth measuring.
